child caregivers comes in the form of a handy “wheel.” The Michigan
Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH), the Michigan Department

families through the critical first years! Easy to read and user
friendly, parents and caregivers can follow an infant’s progress around
the wheel until he or she is three years old. With just a ‘turn of the
dial’ a caring adult will discover many things he or she can do to
nurture a strong relationship and support healthy social and emotional

Difficulty Making Adequate Yearly Progress Linked to Lead Poisoning
- This map (click
here for PDF map) overlays 2001-02 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
status over elementary school attendance area in the city of Grand
Rapids. The map then plots elevated blood lead level cases that are
greater than or equal to 10 ug/dL in 2000 by elementary attendance area.
Statistical analysis of these data (a F Test) indicated that schools
having more children with lead poisoning greater than 10 ug/dL is
significantly related to not achieving AYP status.

It's time to
change how we view a child's growth. Do you know all the ways you should
measure your child’s growth? We naturally think of height and weight, but
from birth to 5 years, your child should reach milestones in how he plays,
learns, speaks and acts. A delay in any of these areas could be a sign of a
developmental problem, even autism. The good news is, the earlier it’s
recognized the more you can do to help your child reach her full potential.
Here you can view
or download the various materials for the "Learn
the Signs. Act Early." Campaign designed for parents and health care
professionals. All downloads are available in the Adobe® Portable Document

Brochure for Health Care Professionals: "Your Next Patient Has Autism..."
Brochure for Health Care Professionals: "Your
Next Patient Has Autism..." (PDF; size=247k) -
The Education Subcommittee of the North
Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (NSLIJHS) Autism Steering Committee
has recently completed work on its first educational initiative. “Your Next
Patient Has Autism...” is a tri-fold brochure developed for the many health
professionals – nurses, physicians, technicians and others – who provide
services for children on the autism spectrum. It is especially designed for
those who only occasionally treat this population. Physical assessment,
diagnostic imaging, and a variety of other interventions – both invasive and
non-invasive – may induce fear and anxiety in people with autism. Their
behavioral responses to such experiences often interfere with needed care
and increase the risk of physical and/or psychological trauma. “Your Next
Patient Has Autism...” provides caregivers with a brief synopsis of autism
together with specific recommendations for managing the special needs of
these patients in the context of in-patient or out-patient healthcare.
